MERIDEN — Children tore through hay looking for candy during an Easter Egg Hunt at the Meriden Green Saturday morning.
“This is awesome, a great activity for the kids,” said Kim Howard, of Meriden, who came with her family. “It brings everyone together. The kids get to see their friends outside of school.”
They were among dozens of families with children looking for chocolate eggs, having their photo taken with the Easter Bunny, and enjoying balloon animals on a sunny and seasonal day.
Some of the children were lucky enough to find a “golden ticket” — which earned them a tour of the Thompson Chocolate factory on South Vine Street, where all the chocolate eggs used in the hunt were made.
Thompson co-sponsored the event with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
“Everyone’s happy to get the chocolate,” said Parks and Recreation Director Christian Bourdon. “It’s the kickoff to Easter. It’s great to see this many people, especially children and families, on the Green.”
August DeFrances, of Middletown, said he was happy to bring his two children to the Green to enjoy the warmth and have some chocolate.
“It’s definitely a good outlet, because the kids are cooped up all winter,” he said. “It’s nice to see a bunch of people come together.”
His kids joined others sprinting around the grass and clamoring along the rocks lining Harbor Brook.
“I like the fact that they did this for the kids in the community,” said Luis Carrillo, of Meriden. “It’s time to get the kids out of the house.”
His daughter, Bianca Carrillo, 10, said the best part was searching for the eggs, since even if you don’t find many there’s other activities and plenty of friends around.
